How to Play linebacker

I have been playing football since I was in 5ith grade. This is my very favorite sport in the entire world. In high school I played running back on offense and outside linebacker on defense. Although I love scoring touchdowns and picking up first downs. My heart belongs to defense. I have been playing outside linebacker and defensive end for years and have a variety of tips to help a good player get to the next level and become a great player. First of all, I am a strong believer in the saying that football games are not won on Saturday, they are won in the offseason in the weightroom and on the track. By this I mean I think people can only get so good naturally and then people need to take it upon themselves to work hard in the weight room and get as big and strong as they possibly can. To be a good football player speed is also required. Speed is created by spending time on the track or football field on your high school working on sprinting form, speed drills, and explosiveness. Another thing that is required to become a good football player is to be a good listener. As much as I would like to say it, I do not know everything about football. There have been coaches who have been around the game for their entire lives that know the inside and out of every formation and play. In high school I had a great coach named Hugo Bolin who coached in New Hampshire for thirty eight years. He won five state championships and could tell you anything you would ever want to know about football. Hand eye coordination is important to be a great outside linebacker. This will help you make tackles, catch interceptions, and punish blockers. With good hand eye coordination, you will set yourself apart from players who cannot make tackles and make catches the way you can. Over all it takes a lot to become a great football player. The bottom line is becoming a great outside linebacker required hard work, strength, speed, good listening skills, and hand eye coordination. If you master these skills you will take yourself far on the football field.

  1. I could not agree more. In high school I played middle linebacker and all of the things you have stated are the exact things that you would need to do to play defense. More importantly it is difficult to play at the linebacker position. It takes a lot of skill and physicality to play the position. But besides the physical side you need to be sharp mentally. I also agree with the listening aspect as well because if you do not listen to your coaches then you might not learn new things to take yourself to the next level. Also, being able to be coached makes a good player.

  2. I agree with you 100% Luke. Being a football player is no easy task but as a player you must do whatever it takes to become a better. When you do this your skills will translate to the field and you will become a phenomenal player. Being the lazy person I am the off season can absolutely kill you if you don’t work out. The food can run your body down to the point where you are not even in shape to play 5 minutes in a football game. When you run and lift weights during the off season it is so beneficial. You feel like you can go and play a full football game without going out for a break. Although lifting weights and running is important during the you must also have the right diet. Eating all the wrong foods can really mess up your body.
